Adderall Shortage in the U.S.

Adderall and ADHD

Adderall is one of the main drugs used to treat the symptoms of ADHD. It improves the focus and concentration of the patient as it is a direct stimulant on the central nervous system. And although it is an excellent medication for ADHD symptoms, it is addictive and has side effects such as nervousness, restlessness, headaches, and sleep deprivation.

Dr. Craig Surman, the Scientific Coordinator for the Adult ADHD Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, characterized ADHD as a “hardwired pattern of brain function.” He goes on to say that 1 in 10 children develop ADHD while 4% of adults continue to struggle with symptoms and that Adderall is “one of the few medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that reduces the challenges people have.”

The Adderall Shortage

The U.S. is going through a national adderall shortage as the supply is unable to meet the market demand. Many people who rely on the drug are concerned with how and when they will be able to get their medication they need to function. Because adderall treats several attention-deficit disorders many people are resorting to “pharmacy shopping” to see which pharmacies have the supply. Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the demand for prescription adderall increased by almost 15% and that demand has not decreased since the pandemic has ended.

The Future

The FDA announced in November 18, 2022 that the Adderall shortages will last at least until the new year. The demand has far exceeded the U.S. ability to produce the drug and continued manufacturing delays have only exacerbated the situation.

The FDA’s confirmation of the continuation of the adderall shortage has left a lot of people without the necessary medication to control their ADHD symptoms and navigate their daily lives without trouble. Although it is the end of the year, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight.
